A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away.......
I was a mortgage broker!!
Before my restaurant management days, I worked as a mortgage broker for a small firm in Charlotte, NC.
I was really good at it. It was easy to sell people on refinancing their homes. I had a lot of clients.
While I was doing it, I was approached by a woman. Her son was in jail and she needed to get money to bail him out.
She was desperate to get money. She wanted to refinance her home so she could get money to bail out her son (The bail was like $10,000 so he did something pretty rough!).
She was a single 66 year old woman living on Social Security.
Desperation is delicious for a salesman. I worked out the numbers and the deal I had at first had me making $9500. My bosses were pleased!
For a 23 year old kid living at home, that is huge!
For a 33 year old father, that is huge!
I ended up making $50 on the deal.
It was the last mortgage deal I ever did.
Sometimes when you have a gift, you have to be very careful.
I have a gift. I am an incredible salesman. I could sell you anything.
I was approached by a company a couple months back about my weight loss. Losing 220 pounds in a year is crazy, yet amazing!
They wanted me to promote their product. It was good money. I am not sure if it was life altering money, but decent. Then they sent me a email that had this included:
"You might want to change your story a little. The way you eat and work out will intimidate people. Throw in you eat a piece of pizza once in a while. Tony...that is Italian! You need to relate to people better."
I declined their offer.
I am not a liar.
I watch so many success stories on the Today Show, and Oprah, and Tyra. They have people who make weight loss look so easy!
Why was it never like that for me.
After twenty years, I finally had the courage to change my life. I did not do it overnight. I have wanted to do it for a long time!
I have been successful of 18 months now! I have kept the promise I made to myself that i will keep the weight off.
Is it easy?
What do you think?
Is it easy for you day in and day out to keep your weight off.
Is it easy to make food decisions every day.
Is it easy to wake up and work out.
No, it is not easy. And anyone who tells you otherwise is a God-Damn liar!
I am not ever going to alter my story. I love my story!
I hope one day my story goes national.
"Did you hear about this restaurant manager/chef who lost over 200 pounds. He lost the first 100 pounds while working at Chili's. CHILI'S! Yeah, the same one that has the 2700 calorie "Onion Appetizer". Then he got promoted at work, and he changed the way he eats. He works out a lot as well. He went like 99 minutes on a StairMaster or something! He says he did it for the love of his wife. I heard he took time off of work to take care of her while she was recovering from surgery. He still works in a restaurant after losing 220 pounds, and, well, I do not know how he does it!"
I do not want to inspire people to eat like me, or work out like me.
I do want people to know that as hard as it is, as much as you feel like their is not hope, it is possible.
Okay, maybe you will not lose 200 pounds in a year. Actually, you won't!
I also hope you do not need to!
But if you can make good decisions 80% of the time, you can change your life!
If you are active two..even three days a week, you will feel better!
If you add fruits and vegetables to your food arsenal, you will feel fuller!
So I will not be selling you a diet system or pills. I will not sell you a sweet workout video or containers to put your food in.
The only thing I can push is my story. The more I maintain this loss, the more credible it will become!

I'm at my restaurant running brunch, but had to read, keep going, good on ya for not being a liar...never succumb.
Tony, I love how you left the bull shit sugar coating off. Losing weight is not easy! BUT, it can be fun. Fun everyday when you notice a little less of you on your arm, leg, stomach, etc. Also, it's fun when you notice your biceps getting bigger, your stamina lasting longer.
Thank you Tony. You need to write a book! What better way to share your story.
Stephen
I absolutely adore reading your blog.
I think it's wonderful that you won't change your story! You have every right to be proud of what you have accomplished. No reason to throw in a slice of pizza here or a binge there. You did what we are all striving to do...Lose weight and keep it off!
Your story is one of inspiration and helps remind me that anything is possible. I can and WILL achieve my goals.
Keep up the amazing work and thank you for sharing your story with us.
Just tell people they can eat whatever they want and not exercise and still drop the pounds. That's what they want to hear.
Way to keep it real, man.
Good for you!!!
More need to tell the REAL sotory and not make it seem so "easy". Becasue it is not.
Can I get an "amen"? It's been six years that I began "the health journey" and have lost and maintained a loss of 180 pounds. While it has gotten easier, it hasn't gotten easy. I think the only thing that makes it easier is getting into the "habit" of living this way. But, it will never be "easy." I think the first step was acknowledging how ignorant I was when it came to taking control of my health. And you know what? The process of learning and re-learning how to eat, how to exercise, how to balance my life so that I actually enjoy it, is freakin' hard and an everyday challenge. People have told me I must have gotten surgery. They said I probably had anorexia or bulimia. They didn't want to acknowledge the sheer dedication and will power that you have to consistently maintain to get to a better health if you're starting at ground zero. They didn't want to see that I cook almost every meal that goes into my body and that i go out to eat with my boyfriend and refuse to order if I don't think the menu offers something good enough for my body and that i kick my ass in the gym 6 days a week. I could go on forever, so sorry i'm ranting. Thanks for a post that lit a dimming flame inside. Rock on Tony -- you're a warrior.
I love this and I needed to read it today. :)
When people ask me how I lost weight I always tell them "...yeah, i eat healthy food and exercise". And I'm sorry if that's not what people want to hear but I'm proud of myself and have no problem saying it wasn't always rainbows and unicorns.
Very nice. Like you, my integrity isn't for sale.
I'm so proud and honored to follow your journey.
my best
Sean
I think it's great that you won't change your story. That's called integrity!
To be honest, I'm impressed with how well you stick to your healthy eating. I've lost around 109 lbs so far, but I do not stick to my healthy eating all of the time. (Of course, it's taken me just over a year to reach this weight loss.)
It is most certainly not easy!! Thanks for a fantastic post. It's hard work and worth it.
You're an inspiration, thank you!!
Nice post Tony. I think you give old JoPo a run for his money any day. I look forward to your posts as much as I do his now. Who says he's the most talented writing Posnanski anyway? And by the way I live and die by the 80% rule...well except when I'm on vacation.
To be honest if you ever start selling anything we will all know it is complete bullshit. Sure you might make money, but we know you didn't lose weight doing it that way. And I think whatever company offered you that sucks because you shouldn't be lying to sell people things. That's just crap.
Right on, Tony! It just illustrates once more what lies behind these "miracle products" we see advertised all the time...
And you're right about another thing - the proof is definitely in the pudding!
If you said it WAS easy, we would all call you on the BS. Good for you for being honest and truthful. We need more people like that in America.
I agree with everyone else here, your no-nonsense attitude and honesty is what inspires me so much! Don't sell out for anyone - integrity is worth it, every time.
No one ever wants to hear that the answer is regular exercise and eating better. I disappointed a whole DMV with that spiel.
Good for you for staying ture to your great story!

I read a lot of blogs (found yours today.) And I see a lot of people trying fad diets then trying other fad diets, and I'm sure some of them work for some people. But I'm losing weight (consistently) through eating less crap, more fruits and veggies and exercising a lot more. It hasn't happened overnight, but it's working great, and I love stepping on the scale. It's much better than the dread I felt before I took charge of my body.
I'm with you on that...totally.
GOOD ON YOU for not being a sell-out :) Sometimes people make comments like "oh you have such a good metabolism" to me, and I have to correct them and say "no no... it's taken a lot of hard work and I'm still working hard!". Weight is no easy thing to master.
Tony, I am soo glad to hear that you don't lose your values to become a salesperson. As you may know I do herbalife part time around my full time job. I constantly am careful that I am more concerned about my client than the money I will make.
I love your philosophy! For me herbalife worked but many things can work for different people.
I still work out and run also.
Great ethics! When people ask me how I did it, I tell them that it's a secret, but I will share it only with them! "It's changing my eating habits to a healthy way of eating (not a diet) and regular exercise." It ain't easy, but it IS doable. You are awesome.

oh i LOVE IT! Good for you for sticking to your principles. Your story is phenomenal and doesn't need 'altering' - how shocking that someone would ask you to do that!
I've only just discovered your blog (i know, WHERE have I been??!!) via jen's blog and I LOVE IT!!! Thanks for your honesty

Good for you for staying true to yourself! As a writer I’ve also encountered similar offers if I would just make “a few small changes” that ended up being huge changes that radically changed my characters or their motivation. I’ve always taken a pass on those particular contract offers because I refuse to sell out.
I especially like when you said this: But if you can make good decisions 80% of the time, you can change your life! That’s where it’s at. It doesn’t always have to be all or nothing; doesn’t have to always be 100%. If we just keep plugging away and doing our best to make those good decisions the majority of the time, we’ll be in good shape mentally and physically!

First comment - gotta say love the blog.
I love that you won't change your story even if it means a lot of money. In this economy that says a lot about you! I agree - you should write a book!
You're right, it doesn't get easy. It gets easier, but I know I have to at least be conscious of what I'm eating (even if I'm not eating every meal healthy, I have to remind myself that it's the exception to splurge and not the norm) or I'm liable to gain back that 115 lbs I left back in 2007 and 2008...
I love your story. It's real. And YOU are real. Don't ever change.
I know you wouldn't change your story. As for credibility, to me you already have that. You did it, the weight loss, without any gimmicks and without starving or pills or anything else. YOu were one of the first blogs I started reading because I typed in losing weight the healthy way, and your blog came up. Credibility established.
Thank you for keeping to your story. Hadn't thought about it, but perhaps the fake stories sold as true are part of problem.... telling us all we need to do is allow ourselves to cheat every once in a while.
Not good. Thanks,Tony.
Tony,
I'm the same way. I worked at Domino's during my early WW days and people on the message boards couldn't believe that I could work there and still lose every week :)
I have been on my journey of ups and downs in this weight loss adventure for almost 10 years now. Like you, I will not sugar coat how difficult this journey has been.
True weight loss and maintenance most definitely is not an overnight journey.
Continued success to you :)
